Late last night, five more of the wild horses running loose in the 1 ˝ square mile area of NW Miami-Dade County (Hialeah) have been captured and brought to the South Florida S.P.C.A. rescue ranch, bringing the total rescued to 11 horses. “The difference between Friday’s round up of six horses from the rural area with no streets where they have been roaming, is that last night this group of horses were running on a highly trafficked street, posing a very serious public safety hazard to people travelling on NW 138th Street (Graham Dairy Road) and NW 97th Avenue. It was only the quick action of South Florida SPCA volunteers that prevented a human tragedy from happening.” Stated Jeanette Jordan, president of South Florida SPCA.
“These horses had to travel more than a mile on public roads probably in search of food.” The SFSPCA is keeping a close eye on the situation. “We believe that there are at least 10 more horses out there that need to come in. The area where they are is accessible only on horseback. We are making plans to do just that to save these horses from starvation and to prevent them from reaching public roads. Clearly the horses are becoming more desperate for food and we must help them,” continued Jordan. “The South Florida SPCA is a non-profit agency, not affiliated with any national organization. We must depend on the generosity of the public to continue our work. As of this moment, we have a total of 50 rescued horses on our rescue ranch. With at least 10 more needing to come in in the next day or so, we will have 60 horses. We cannot support this number of animals without help from the general public. We also need horse owners to help us by fostering or adopting as we are running out of space,” Jordan pleaded. UPDATE ON HORSES RUNNING WILD IN HIALEAH, FL CAPTURE OF REMAINING 10 HORSES PUT ON HOLD DUE TO WEATHER The round-up of the remaining 10 horses at large in Hialeah planned for today has been cancelled due to weather. “The SFSPCA is keeping a close eye on the situation. We believe that there are at least 10 more horses out there that need to come in. The area where they are is accessible only on horseback. We will go in there and get them out as soon as possible” stated Laurie Waggoner, executive director of South Florida SPCA. “Our first concern is the safety of our volunteers who will be rounding up the remaining horses. The wet weather conditions make the round up more difficult. To maximize the safety of our volunteers and the horses, the decision has been made to wait until the weather clears and standing water drains from the area”, stated Jeanette Jordan, president of South Florida SPCA. “The South Florida SPCA is a non-profit agency, not affiliated with any national organization. We must depend on the generosity of the public to continue our work. As of this moment, we have a total of 50 rescued horses on our rescue ranch. With at least 10 more needing to come in we will soon have 60 horses under our care. We cannot support this number of animals indefinitely without help from the general public. We also need horse owners to help us by fostering or adopting as we are running out of space,” Jordan pleaded. Donations can be made at www.helpthehorses.org or sent to South Florida SPCA, 15476 NW 77 Court, #440, Miami Lakes, FL 33016.
