RETIRED ON 7/30/19!!!
We rescued this emaciated 30+ year-old pony mare on 6/10/19, whose elderly owner thought “putting her out to pasture” in a banana grove would sustain her until she passed. We see this time and again, where people do not understand that the grass and forage in South Florida has little to no nutritional value, and that horses starve and die if left to graze here without supplemental feed and hay. This sweet senior is now safe with us. At her age and precarious state of health, we are guardedly optimistic about her recovery.
7/22/19 UPDATE: Margarita has made steady progress with weight gain. See her now-and-then photos to compare. Margarita is quite the horse-of-habit, making her rounds in our “back yard” every morning and settling down for a nap in the exact same spot. Every. Single. Day. We just love this old gal, and are so happy to report she’s recovering so nicely. VERY grateful to everyone who donated in her honor!
