Morgan and her foal Flirt owe their lives to an anonymous citizen who called us to report them and three other horses abandoned in a remote, vacant field with no food or water in the infamous 8.5/East Everglades on Thursday, May 18, 2017. Had they been left there much longer, they would definitely not live. (For media coverage, click here.)
/19/17: Morgan is in by far the worst shape of the group and will take many months to recover. She’s down to skin and bone, scoring only a 1 on the Henneke body scoring scale, and producing very little milk. She and Flirt will need close monitoring and critical care. Please check back soon for progress notes and photos, and consider making a donation to help them.
/14/17: What a difference! Mom Morgan has gained weight and is so much healthier, and her filly Flirt is growing and learning to trust. The pictures really tell the story. Every time we look in their eyes, we remember just how lucky they are to be alive. After quarantine the pair was moved into our maternity stall in the barn, where Morgan is much more comfortable. The heat is taxing for her, probably a non-sweater. With fans and great air-flow in their stall, she’s feeling better. Huge thanks to our staff for their great work on behalf of Morgan and Flirt!
/18/17: Morgan and Flirt were rescued exactly three months ago today, and if we were wowed by their improvement last month, we’re floored by how they look today. Mother and daughter are the sweetest pair, both very friendly (though Morgan is a good, protective mom) and easy to handle. Flirt’s name totally suits her, always curious and making friends with everyone. We are thrilled with their progress!
/14/17: With Hurricane Irma bearing down on South Florida, Morgan and Flirt were evacuated 300 miles north to Ocala, along with 36 other horses and foals. With extensive damage to the SFSPCA ranch, they will remain in Ocala until repairs are made and it is safe for them to return.
/1/17: Morgan and Flirt are so happy to be back at the ranch! We appreciate everyone who made their return possible!
