Navel Air is an unraced Thoroughbred we rescued with four other abandoned horses, including a foal, from a vacant field in the infamous 8.5/East Everglades on Thursday, May 18, 2017. If not for an anonymous caller reporting them to us, he and the others would not have survived. (For media coverage, click here.) As you can see from the photos, “Navy” is emaciated and will take months to rehabilitate. He came in with sore feet, but our farrier shoed him immediately which made him more comfortable.
Navy will be in quarantine for 21 days with the others, and will be available for adoption once his weight and health are restored. Please check back for progress notes and photos, and consider donating to help with his care.
7/18/17 UPDATE: We’re at the 2 month mark since Navy’s rescue, and look at the difference! We feel he needs just a couple more weeks to gain a little more weight before try him under saddle and assess his rider suitability. Until then, we note he’s a really sweet guy and super easy on the ground. Check back for updates!
8/18/17 UPDATE: Three months after rescue and Navy’s looking great! He’s sound and an absolutely beautiful mover, and we intend to try him under saddle very soon. As mentioned last month, his ground manners are fantastic. He’s very friendly and wants to please, and has been since the very first day he arrived. We have a very good feeling about this big lovable guy!
9/24//17 UPDATE: Navy is now in training and making progress, so far lunging work under tack. He is anxious when being tacked up, and our trainer believes he was probably beaten or abused. She’s giving him the space and time he needs to work through this and to develop trust.
If you would like to learn more about Navy and/or to make an appointment to see him, please email Lisa Oppenheimer at firstname.lastname@example.org (only if you are 18 or older). Please note we only adopt within the state of Florida. We also encourage potential adopters to review our application in advance, as it will likely answer most questions about our adoption procedure and requirements.
